I grew up in Michigan with seriously long winters and crazy snow storms. When I was in elementary school, I distinctly remember there being one year where we had an entire week off from school because of snow storms. Since moving to the East coast however, I've learned to experience a whole new world of weather. It's one that includes Nor'easters and hurricanes, the latter of which we are getting in the next few days. There's been a bit of a frenzy in the air, not just because of changing levels of pressure, but because everyone, and I mean everyone is concerned about what this hurricane will bring. A family in our church told us today, that LIPA called them and told them to expect a week or two without power. I'm hoping that because they didn't call us, it won't be that bad where we are.
All that being said, we spent a good portion of today getting ready for the big storm. Since using Scentsy, I pretty much stopped using candles. Thankfully, I had a good stash left from my pre-Scentsy years, most of which I got for super cheap using coupons.
Yesterday, I picked up a few gallons of water which we threw in the freezer, in case we lose power. Thanks to a tip on the ESM Facebook community page, we can throw them in the refrigerator to help keep our food cool a bit longer if the power goes out.
I also bought 620 paper plates. Mostly because I picked up the pack at Costco yesterday when I was there. It seems a bit excessive, but I'm sure we will eventually use them, and hopefully not because we have to within the next few weeks.
I also picked up some non-perishables. Some are pictured here. I threw in the Lichi Meal Replacements, not because I genuinely feel that we will have to use them, but mostly because I got them for free and if worse comes to worse, we have some options. and we will have a few weeks of Chocolate Delight to enjoy.
As I was getting ready, I stopped to remind myself of this. My friend Amber gave this to me years ago, and it serves as a great reminder of where to place my focus.
This afternoon, we found out that Christian and Ellee's school is cancelled for the next two days, so these will get to stay put for awhile.
As you can imagine, they were both pretty excited at the news.
Finally, I'm super happy that I decided to pick these up this week. I've always wanted a pair of Hunter Rain Boots and chances are they will certainly come in handy this week.
So, there you have it, a glimpse of a few of the hurricane preparations we've made. We have batteries charging and are planning on eating our most fun refrigerated food tonight. If we do lose power, the Ben and Jerry's Fro-Yo Phish Food is first on my list to save from the freezer. Besides that, I'm praying... praying for safety for ourselves and our community. If you are located elsewhere, we would love to have your thoughts and prayers for safety over the next few days.
